Dive Brief:
- The two main types of audiovisual construction projects on campus either progress from design to bid to build or go straight from design to build, involving a slew of project stakeholders to keep in mind.
- In the first of a monthly series, Campus Technology outlines these types of projects and the stakeholders who need to be kept informed for them to go smoothly — i.e. staff from the audiovisual support team, IT, facilities, construction planning, and the department requesting the project.
- The people on the design team are the architect and the AV consultant, who work with contractors to carry the project through to fruition, whether that includes a bid phase or not.
Dive Insight:
Many colleges and universities are incorporating new classroom designs into new construction or major remodels, acknowledging the changing desires of students and their workforce needs.
Collaborative classrooms aim to do away with the traditional lecture, giving students opportunities to engage in their own investigations through shared screen computers and other tools.
This type of classroom design seems to be the wave of the future in higher ed. Research and planning is key to creating a classroom that will be used as envisioned. Training is almost certainly necessary as faculty shift their pedagogy. After all, expensive new facilities aren't worthwhile if they don't change instruction.
