Dive Brief:
- A movement is underway to create a common ground when it comes to data collection and reporting around student learning.
- The IMS Learning Consortium, a group of more than 300 colleges and vendors, is close to releasing a framework it hopes will create a new standard to guide data collection, tracking, and reporting moving forward.
- The framework, called Caliper, also will create a common yardstick for measuring “learning activities and effectiveness,” giving institutions the tools they need to evaluate outcomes and improve quality.
Dive Insight:
Caliper builds on the consortium’s previous work on the Learning Tools Interoperability framework, which has been widely adopted as a way to incorporate outside platforms into learning management systems. Colleges and universities ask students and faculty to interact with a range of platforms, in part thanks to the ease of integrating them. Caliper will give institutions more information about the data that is being collected to better analyze it in context. From there, schools will have the power to implement early intervention initiatives, keeping students on track for success.
