Dive Brief:
- Non-profit MOOC provider edX is now offering a solution where online test proctors access saved video later instead of coordinating enough people to watch a livestream of test-takers.
- Campus Technology reports the virtual proctoring solution improves verification capabilities, giving students the opportunity to take final exams for course credit from anywhere and making sure faculty know they completed all the work themselves.
- The technology, called RPNow, was developed by Software Secure and enables a student’s webcam, walks them through test-taking rules, and then sends video back to Software Secure employees who review all of the footage, according to the article.
Dive Insight:
Online coursework has allowed students from across the globe to access classes they otherwise may not have been able to. When brick-and-mortar colleges and universities offer online programs, they have historically required students to be on campus to take final exams. This new proctoring technology provides powerful flexibility for students and instructors. The original iteration of online proctoring required all students across time zones to take an online exam at the same time, while proctors tried to watch everyone at once. Now students can take online exams at any time and proctors have several days to carefully verify students and their test-taking.
