Google Play for Education to allow multiple tablet users

Dive Brief:

  • Google Play for Education announced Thursday that schools can register up to five student accounts per tablet.
  • The platform launched six months ago for tablets andcurates games and activities for students based on their age and interests, additionally including educational videos and classic texts.
  • Allowing up to five students to have an account on a tablet allows schools to cost-effectively purchase tablets that support Play for Education.

Dive Insight:

Like many competitors in the ed-tech sector, Google Play for Education appears to be trying to carve a niche for itself in the largely Apple-dominated marketplace. Allowing schools to split the costs of tablets by dividing the number they need by five will make a huge difference for those wanting to integrate tech into classrooms on a tight budget. As has been noted, it's somewhat unrealistic for all schools to make 1:1 deployments — unless you're Los Angeles, of course.
