Dive Brief:
- Grand Valley State University is reinstalling a pendulum sculpture Tuesday used by students in parodies of Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" music video.
- The sculpture will return to its home behind Padnos Hall of Science at the same length, but changes to the site will discourage students from disrobing and climbing aboard again.
- Changes include a 4-foot fence and signs that warn students not enter, and also describe the pendulum's artistic and scientific qualities.
Dive Insight:
The pendulum was removed from the site in September due to safety concerns, and for good reason. As a result of students riding the pendulum, a frayed cable harness and eye bolt had to be replaced. The $25,000 renovation to the site will be completed Dec. 6, and while the new octagonal-shaped concrete boundary and fence still won't prevent students from riding the pendulum, officials expect them to respect the warning signs.
