Dive Brief:
- Harvard Dean of Faculty of Arts and Sciences Michael D. Smith announced in an e-mail Wednesday that Rakesh Khurana will serve as the next dean of Harvard College.
- Khurana is currently a member of the university's Academic Integrity Committee, a professor at Harvard Business School, and co-master of Cabot House, along with his wife, Stephanie R. Khurana. He will continue as co-master after beginning as dean on July 1, but will cease teaching.
- Evelynn M. Hammonds, the former dean of Harvard College from 2008 to 2013, stepped down last July following her admission that she broke FAS email privacy policy in the wake of a headline-grabbing cheating scandal, and Interim Dean Donald H. Pfister has held the position since.
Dive Insight:
Between the cheating scandal and the secret email searches, Harvard College has had a rough year. Smith praised Khurana's inclusive leadership style in the email announcement, and Khurana says he is looking forward to working with faculty, staff, and students. Here's hoping his tenure allows the college to leave the previous scandals behind them.
