Dive Brief:
- Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday told Fayette County school district that the state would step in if the district doesn't raise student achievement in its low-performing schools.
- In a May 14 letter to the district, Holliday outlined 13 issues, such as an achievement gap, and a lack of support for continually red-flagged schools.
- According to the Associated Press, the emphasis on immediate improvement stems from the fact that a redistricting committee has proposed to redraw district lines, moving some children into troubled Fayette County schools.
Dive Insight:
Fayette County is not currently giving its lowest performing schools extra funding required for improvements. The issue, however, is that Fayette says it doesn't have the money to spend.
Fayette has till Dec. 1 to create an improvement plan to Holliday's liking or "face a possible comprehensive management audit."
