Dive Brief:
- Students and faculty members value learning management systems, but few used the advanced LMS features that are available.
- LMS users are happiest with basic features and show the least satisfaction with collaboration and engagement features, according to a new report from Educause, an association of IT professionals in higher education.
- The average LMS age is eight years, with 15% of the institutions surveyed planning an LMS replacement within three years.
Dive Insight:
The report analyzes the findings of two surveys: one of IT practices in 2013 and another of education technology expectations at higher ed institutions in 2014. According to the report, students and faculty want their LMS to have enhanced features, to be personalized and to improve learning by using analytics. Mobile device access by students to the LMS is increasingly common and gaining importance. And while most students are digitally literate, their skills and experiences don’t necessarily translate to specific technology applications like a LMS, the report states.
