Dive Brief:
- The New York Times and CIG Education Group are launching an initiative that will offer pre-college and higher education courses.
- The program, called NYT EDUcation, will begin in the fall.
- Details are scarce, including the cost of the program, what topics the courses will cover, and who will teach them, the Chronicle of Higher Education reported.
Dive Insight:
The announcement of the NYT EDUcation program doesn’t explicitly say so, but it would seem that one advantage the New York Times would have would be its access to content — through its archives and fledgling video production arm — and potential lecturers from its editorial staff. However, journalists for the news organization will not be required to contribute to the program. An earlier attempt at an online educational program from the Times, in partnership with Stanford University, was called Knowledge Network. That program ended in 2012.
