Dive Brief:
- The latest staffing report from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education shows a sector of the industry continuing to grow, become more diverse, and boast more experience.
- Findings from AASHE’s 2015 report show 23% of respondents holding their positions for six years or more, up from 12% in 2012, and along those lines, median salaries are slightly higher overall.
- More schools are funding sustainability initiatives through student fees, and more are home to at least one office, center, or institute with “sustainability” in its name.
Dive Insight:
When it comes to diversity, minority respondents were still a tiny portion of the total in the AASHE survey but up from 8% in 2012 to 10% in 2015. The gender disparity is also smaller with women earning 93 cents for every dollar a man earned in 2015, up from 88 cents to the dollar in 2012, according to AASHE. While many campuses are turning to students to help pay for some of the sustainability initiatives they often demand, that portion is still just 9% of all campuses. For administrators who don’t think they can afford new projects, letting students vote on a new fee to fund them may be the answer.
