Dive Brief:
- More than 800 University of Michigan students have signed up for a free online health policy course open only to students from the university.
- The course is touted as the university’s first “residential MOOC,” or massive open online course, Campus Technology reported, even though it's technically not open to all comers.
- The course is part of the university’s medical and dental school curriculums, and undergraduate, graduate, and professional students have enrolled in it.
Dive Insight:
The course is designed similar to a TV show with weekly episodes, with one-on-one interviews with faculty and panel discussions on various topics. Students in the course will meet in small discussion groups in the fifth week of instruction. "Understanding and Improving United States Healthcare: Special U-M Student Edition” is taught by Matthew Davis, who previously taught the MOOC for 3,800 students internationally. About 850 students completed the course. Davis is a professor at the university’s Medical School, the Ford School of Public Policy, and School of Public Health.
