Dive Insight:
Hosting the debates offers an opportunity for campus pride and brings the schools into the national spotlight, if only as background. Especially when an incumbent president is running for re-election, the logistics and security precautions can be daunting — and costly. Washington University in St. Louis, however, seems to think the hassle is worth the trouble, as the Chronicle of Higher Education reports that it has been tapped to host debates in nearly every presidential election since 1992.
