Portland Public Schools Renews Partnership with Edthena to Deliver Video Coaching to Dual Language Teachers

 

Video coaching to help teachers continuously improve targeted instructional skills during the 2017-18 school year

 

PORTLAND, Ore. (September 12, 2017) – Through its renewed partnership with Edthena, Portland Public Schools in Oregon will provide video coaching to its dual language teachers throughout the 2017-18 school year. Video coaching will be an integral part of the professional learning process to help Portland teachers develop concrete instructional skills to use in their classrooms.

 

“Our coaches work collaboratively with bilingual teachers on three main instructional practices – landing the objective, gradual release of responsibility, and student interactions,” said Debbie Armendariz, senior director in the department of dual language at Portland Public Schools. “With Edthena, coaches and small groups of teachers watch four- to five-minute videos of these instructional practices in action and discuss strategies for improvement. This really creates focus for our professional learning communities (PLCs) and makes the overall coaching process more efficient and meaningful.”

 

With the Edthena platform, teachers quickly and easily upload videos of their classroom instruction from any video camera and then share those videos with coaches and colleagues who provide timestamped comments categorized as questions, suggestions, strengths, and notes. The platform enables teachers and coaches to participate in collaborative professional learning cycles. Reports and graphs, linked to the school’s or district’s associated professional standards, help identify teaching trends, determine if the professional development is improving teaching practices, and provide a basis for ongoing dialogue about instructional best practices.

 

“Edthena also gives me a window into the classroom and helps me coach the coaches,” said Armendariz. “We can look at the classroom videos together and discuss effective coaching strategies that would most benefit the individual teachers.”

 

Schools, districts, and teacher education programs in nearly 30 states are using the Edthena platform to make video observation an integral part of teacher induction, teacher mentoring, PLCs, and peer observation.
