CUNY Community College receives $15 million and a new name
- City University of New York's New Community College received a $15 million gift from the Stella and Charles Guttman Foundation and will now be known as the Stella and Charles Guttman Community College.
- The foundation also gave an additional $10 million to CUNY to help improve graduation rates at all seven of its campuses.
- The combined $25 million gift was announced Monday and is the largest donation the Stella and Charles Guttman Foundation has ever given, representing half of its current assets.

Elizabeth Olofson, the executive director of the foundation, said its work in programs on early childhood education and college access had brought it into contact with many students in the city’s public schools. But when asked how those students fared in college, the programs’ administrators said they did not have the resources to track that information.
“We know the number of public school students who go on to CUNY, especially community college, and we really felt our grant could have an impact on helping these students succeed,” Ms. Olofson said. “That’s where the need was greatest.” ...
