D2L announces Web accessibility MOOC with Portland Community College [Educause 2014]
- At Educause Monday, D2L announced the launch of a MOOC, "Web Accessibility MOOC for Online Educators," with Portland Community College.
- The course aims to help online educators increase the accessibility of their courses for students with disabilities.
- The MOOC launches October 20, but those interested can already register.
LMS provider D2L, which may be more recognizable to readers as Desire2Learn, is best known for its integrated learning platform, Brightspace. It began offering MOOCs via its platform around this time last year, so it should come as no surprise that the company would want to release a MOOC to help make that content better and more accessible for students with disabilities. In its release, D2L cited a U.S. Department of Education report that showed 11% of higher ed students with a disability and 13% of high school students. State laws require face-to-face courses to make themselves accessible to these students, so it only makes sense that their online counterparts should follow suit.
