Dive Brief:
- A former State University of New York president has agreed to pay back $99,536 he received in unauthorized outside income before he officially retires from SUNY Upstate Medical University on Oct. 1.
- David Smith was replaced as the university's president last fall while under investigation for accepting payments from contractors. Since then, he has been serving in a medical campus position that pays $205,000 per year, or less than a third of what he received as president.
- Smith, who was set to become the next president of Penn State University before the scandal became public, remains under investigation by the state Inspector General’s Office, reported the Times Union, which broke the story.
Dive Insight:
SUNY is reserving its right to bring charges against Smith, who has already paid SUNY about half of the outside pay he had received without authorization from Chancellor Nancy Zimpher. The pay was in 2012 and 2013 from Pediatrics Service Group, which did business with Upstate Medical. Smith may also have to give up more than $300,000 in deferred compensation from outside sources that were not approved by Zimpher.
