Grand Rapids Community College works with public safety contractor to improve emergency plans
- Grand Rapids Community College is working with Grandville-based public safety contractor Praecipio to "research, update, rewrite, reformat and provide electronic copies" of the school's emergency response plan.
- The school entered into the $6,300 contract prior to the Dec. 14 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., but its efforts have become more significant since then as it--and many other schools across the nation--question how they would have handled such an unthinkable scenario.
- Praecipio's work is expected to be completed at the end of the month, but GRCC Police Chief Rebecca Whitman says she has no doubt that campus police are already trained and ready to respond to any situation at the school, which had three arrests on its main campus in 2011.
