Near-record number of data breaches for higher ed in 2012
- Application Security released its rankings of higher education "data breach madness" winners, a list of colleges and universities that experienced notable data breaches in 2012.
- The University of Nebraska topped the list this year with a reported breach of 654,000 records on May 25, and the list's "Final Four"--the top three of which also cracked the top 10 higher ed data breaches of all time--was rounded out by the University of North Carolina, Arizona State University and Northwest Florida State College.
- The list is released via Application Security's research arm, TeamShatter, which noted that 2012's total record breaches approached 2 million, second only to 2006's reported 2.03 million record breaches.
