- The Maine Mathematics Coaching Project is a two-year training program providing prekindergarten through eighth grade students, who are nominated by their schools, with additional hands-on help from its math coaches in training.
- Currently, the state has 58 math coaches (also known as math specialists), but prior to this program, there was no official training for them to learn skills.

According to the 2014 Educate Maine report, the state's fourth- and eighth-grade math proficiency levels trail their counterparts in other New England states, making clear the need not just for math remediation from trained adults who know how to help.
