Winners will receive a $15,000 cash prize to expand their Geometry in Construction program
(Sept. 19, 2018) Denver, Colo. – Educators from Green Mountain High School in Jefferson County Public Schools last night were awarded The Succeeds Prize 2018 for Excellence in Education Innovation during a celebration honoring Colorado public schools and educators. The $15,000 cash prize, presented by Janus Henderson Investors, was awarded to Colleen Owens, Scott Burke, Tracy Csavina and Lora Bong to expand their Geometry in Construction program.
The Succeeds Prize—a partnership between 9NEWS, Colorado Succeeds and mindSpark Learning— recognizes and rewards Colorado’s transformational public schools and educators who are driving strong student success. It also seeks to provide forward-thinking educators with seed funding to bring their big ideas to fruition. Sponsored by Colorado’s business community, The Succeeds Prize awarded schools across six categories with a total of $150,000 in cash prizes.
“We know Colorado educators are brimming with big ideas for their students, yet often lack the opportunity or resources to make these unique learning experiences a reality,” said Tiphani Krueger, Janus Henderson co-head of human resources and Janus Henderson Foundation board president. “As investors in innovative companies across the globe, we are also trilled to invest in Colorado educators unleashing their creativity and pushing the boundaries of what learning can look like. It’s an honor to provide Green Mountain educators with funding for this initiative and we congratulate them on this exciting next step.”
Geometry in Construction was selected by a panel of experts across business, entrepreneurship and education innovation through the use of a multi-step process, including a shark tank-style live pitch.
"We are honored and grateful to receive The Succeeds Prize for Excellence in Education Innovation,” said Colleen Owens, principal of Green Mountain High School. “When students have the opportunity to do hands-on problem solving, engagement and learning skyrocket. The Succeeds Prize will allow us to expand Geometry in Construction to more students across Jefferson County Public Schools. Thank you to The Succeeds Prize and to Janus Henderson Investors for investing in educators and our students.”
The Geometry in Construction program teaches math standards through the natural progression of building a home for a local family in need. Green Mountain High School plans to partner with Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver to bring this unique experience to the entire student body. Their long-term goal, through funding from The Succeeds Prize Innovation Award, is to bring Geometry in Construction to all Jefferson County Public Schools.
In addition to receiving the cash prizes, each winning school will also receive customized professional training from mindSpark Learning, a non-profit dedicated to re-engineering education through educators with unique professional learning experiences for both the school leader and teacher.
