Ambitious high school students who aspire to careers as brain surgeons or neuroscience researchers will showcase their skills in the 8th annual Brain Bee competition, hosted by Burke Rehabilitation Hospital. The event will take place on Burke’s campus (785 Mamaroneck Ave. in White Plains) on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, at 4:30 p.m.
Brain Bee is a three-tiered competition, founded in 1998 with a mission to “build better brains to fight brain disorders.” From Burke’s and other regional competitions, it culminates in an international world championship, to take place this year in South Korea. More than 25,000 students from 50+ countries compete each year in Brain Bee.
At Burke’s Brain Bee event, local students in grades 9-12 will be quizzed by a distinguished panel of the hospital’s clinicians and therapists. Topics will encompass human neuroanatomy, neuroscience, types of diagnoses and brain cell identification.
“Brain Bee is one of the only student events that uniquely focuses on neuroscience and encourages young people to enter this important field, where they can help to discover crucial cures for illnesses and injuries,” says Janet Goodman, LMSW, a Social Work/Care Manager in Burke’s Brain Injury Program and coordinator for the Brain Bee in Westchester. “It is an ideal opportunity to spark excitement for the field of neuroscience among bright students, in keeping with Burke’s unparalleled commitment to the field.”
In addition to hosting the Brain Bee, Burke Rehabilitation Hospital has a number of important initiatives to foster the next generation of elite neuroscientists, including the hospital’s nationally recognized, ACGME-accredited residency program.
The Brain Bee will be held in the Rosedale Conference Room of Building #4 on the Burke campus. Brain Bee competitors must be high school students (grades 9-12) in Westchester County.
