Memphis TN. (April 13, 2020) –Shelby County Schools (SCS) is proud to partner with Discovery Education to provide students and families with free access to incredible online learning resources through the Discovery Education Experience platform.
Discovery Education Experience is packed with over 190,000 activities and resources for K-12 students and teachers, all based on core curriculum concepts and popular topics in Math, Science, Social Studies, ELA and Health. The site features everything students need to enhance at-home virtual learning, including fun videos, interactive activities and ready-to-use lessons.
“We’re working tirelessly to find solutions for the unique challenges that distance learning has created for our principals, teachers and families during this unprecedented pandemic,” said Superintendent Dr. Joris M. Ray. “We cannot do this work alone. The partnership with Discovery Education is critical as we cultivate a system of supports to maintain continuity of learning. We are extremely grateful to offer this collection of interactive resources designed to help our teachers deliver remote lessons and keep students engaged.”
“Since the beginning of the Coronavirus crisis, educators across Shelby County Schools have approached the challenge of remote learning with a ‘Can Do!’ attitude that highlights their professionalism and commitment to student learning,” said Rob Warren, Discovery Education’s Senior Vice President of K-12 Partnerships. “Discovery Education is incredibly proud to support Shelby County Schools and their leadership team as they respond to this national emergency and will continue to look for ways to assist the district’s educators as they work to maintain the continuity of teaching and learning within the entire Memphis community.”
Bridging the digital divide is a priority for districts across the nation, and SCS and Discovery Education recognize the inequities that exist for families without computers or internet access. As a way to address these challenges, Discovery Education ensures all virtual and digital platforms have full mobile compatibility. Since March 2020, there have been more than 460,000 views on the SCS website with nearly 70 percent of visitors using mobile devices to view instructional supports. Many of the Discovery Education videos will also broadcast on C19TV as well as on SCS partner television stations. Among the many resources available for SCS educators and families through Discovery Education are:
Professional Learning Events—A series of online webinars and “Ask Me Anything” sessions with members of the Discovery Education team during which educators at all levels are encouraged to log on and ask questions about delivering remote instruction.
Instructional Supports— A variety of digital lesson activities in all subjects that teachers can easily assign to students created by members of the Discovery Educator Community-a global community of education professionals.
Grab & Go Lessons––Shelby County Schools’ educators now have access to ready-to-use, easily adaptable lessons and step-by-step guides, and can find complete collections of research-based strategies through the Instructional Inspiration channel. Also available are one-of-a-kind lessons activities and experiences through Discovery Education’s Virtual Field Trips.
Share with Students––All resources within Experience can be shared with students in a variety of ways, including email, web links/URLs, school learning management systems, social media, and other web-based classroom tools.
