Dive Brief:
- A judge has ordered the accreditor for the City College of San Francisco to reconsider its 2013 decision to revoke accreditation.
- The 2013 decision stripping the college’s accreditation had already been blocked by the courts before it could take effect.
- The San Francisco Superior Court ruling marked the end of the City Attorney’s Office's case against the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, which was sued with allegations that the commission unfairly decided to revoke accreditation.
Dive Insight:
Cutting accreditation would have been a death blow to the college, practically speaking, because the school would have not been able to accept federal or state financial aid. CCSF remains in restoration status with the accrediting commission, giving it two more years to reach compliance. In the meantime, if the college wants to opt in to a reconsideration of the 2013 decision, it has 15 days to respond to a notice from the commission. A reconsideration of the 2013 decision will not remove the restoration status of the college.
