Dive Brief:
- The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development has released a global policy report, which focuses on strategies for engaging the needs of the whole child as well as pushing back against the current high-stakes testing craze.
- While ASCD typically releases legislative suggestions each January, the group said it decided to release its first global policy report since many of today's education concerns are international.
- The reports four main recommendations: Establish a multimetric accountability system, reduce the reliance on standardized testing, promote a whole child education, and honor and support the education profession.
Dive Insight:
It's not surprising that many of these suggestions are inter-related. A reduction in high-stakes testing leaves room for the promotion of social and emotional learning and the promotion of whole child learning. That shift in focus also helps honor the education profession, as it views teachers are real sources of knowledge and support for students, as opposed to standardized test proctors. Lastly, all of those suggestions help shift the focus and establish accountability.
