Dive Brief:
- Jackson College in Mississippi is laying off seven full-time faculty, effective at the end of August.
- The college’s board of trustees unanimously approved the layoffs, which are part of an attempt to save $910,000 in the budget for the 2014-2015 school year.
- The layoffs follow last fall’s layoff of 17 administrators and support staff as part of $2.8 million in budget cuts.
Dive Insight:
More cuts will be needed before the budget is passed in June, according to Jackson College President Dan Phelan. Faculty members who receive a layoff notice can ask to move into another position at the college, if the administration agrees that they are qualified for the position, which could “bump” adjunct faculty and faculty members without continual contracts from their jobs. Faculty who teach anthropology, automotive, biology, chemistry, dance, economics, education, English, English as a second language, French, German, history, physics, and respiratory courses are among those being laid off.
