The breach was uncovered on Jan. 2, and the investigation is still ongoing. The university is expected to notify the people whose information was accessed by the hacker. Once the breach was discovered, the hacked server was isolated from the network. The school will also move its website to a new server. Metropolitan State, which is part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, was notified of a potential breach most likely by someone at the Research and Education Networking Information Sharing and Analysis Center who spotted a blog post by a hacker boasting of breaking into several websites and servers.
