Dive Brief:
-
Education Secretary Arne Duncan this week announced “Teach to Lead,” a teacher leadership initiative in partnership with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
-
The National Board is in charge of the nation's advance teaching credential program. Duncan said the new program will help make certification the norm and not the exception for teachers.
- While the “Teach to Lead” program doesn’t have any specifics yet, some critics say similar initiatives have been laid out before. In 2011, Duncan told the National Board that he wanted to work with them to see increased salaries, refined teacher accountability, and higher thresholds for prospective students to enter schools of education.
Dive Insight:
The lack of an action plan makes it difficult to get too excited about the Teach to Lead initiative. Duncan’s head is in the right place, but the fact that he already proposed much of this in 2011 makes it feel a bit tired and repetitive.
