Dive Brief:
- The Manhattan College men’s basketball coach has been placed on leave after his prospective employer discovered he lied on his resume about graduating from college.
- Fresh off an impressive coaching season, the coach — Steve Masiello — was about to be hired by the University of South Florida when his resume issue was uncovered and the job offer was rescinded.
- Manhattan is apparently reviewing his case and deciding whether he will be allowed to continue coaching at the college.
Dive Insight:
If this turns out to be more than a technicality, did Masiello really think this wouldn’t be uncovered at some point? He stated on his resume that he graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2000 with a communications degree, but the university reports that he only attended school there from 1996 to 2000. His graduation claim was also in his bio on the Manhattan College website. This has happened before with high-profile coaching hires by Rutgers and Notre Dame Notre. When Rutgers men’s basketball coach Eddie Jordan was hired last year, it was revealed he had never graduated from Rutgers, contrary to previous statements by the university that he had. In 2001, Notre Dame’s football coach, George O’Leary, resigned after only five days after he admitted to lying on his resume about earning a master’s degree in education.
